Food selection was limited and the beef was extremely tough. I ordered the fried egg and it was a real letdown, just oily and nothing else. The signature mala soup was underwhelming in both flavour and quality. Service was practically non-existent as everything was self-service. Not a place I’d return to.

Ask for normal stir fried mala, staff recommended the sesame dressing mala and it was very thick, jelat. Do not recommend.

Are y’all freaking serious?
Dabao home mala tang to heat it up at home for supper. Ate almost half of it to pull out 2 strands of hair from my mouth. I know it’s not my hair because I have waist long hair and my hair was bundled up throughout. I decided to throw what’s left because who knows how many strands are in the bowl. Now I’m thinking whether I’ve swallowed any. DISGUSTING, i still can’t get the feeling of me pulling out hair from my mouth out of my head. 🤮🤮🤮

Food is ok
Service is slow
Feeling very thirsty after meal
Good for individuals who want to occupy a big table during peak hours.
In the first 20 minutes we were there only 1 order came out from the kitchen and there were empty tables/ takeaway orders. The cook was busy on the phone.
Service staff does not manage the queue, customers walk in and choose their seats.
Seems to be fixed price for all items on the counter.

serving raw meat to customers?? asked the cook to heat it up again but she refused as she said it was “already cooked” absolutely terrible experience.

This eatery doesn't quite measure up to other similar places in terms of quality. The selection is limited, and the ingredients don't taste as fresh. The soup is particularly disappointing—very diluted and lacking in flavour.
The condiments always seem to run out, and even when you request a top-up, they will just say that they have run out.
Despite all these, I eat here often because it allows me to eat more vegetables.

I've interacted with different staff over the years, and sadly, the service has been consistently unfriendly. If you don't hit the 300g minimum, the staff curtly says, "not enough," often with a frown. Sometimes, I combine with my husband's order to meet the weight, we received the same little amount of soup despite double the amount of ingredients picked. On requesting additional soup, responses varied from grudgingly handing over a small bowl to outright refusal, again with an unfriendly attitude.
If you don't specify otherwise, they boil everything, including fried items like wontons, which then turn soggy and fall apart. Even when you request frying, they fry and then toss the fried items back into the soup. They do not accept requests to separate out the fried items.
On one occasion when we visited in the evening, the staff kept reminding us they were closing—45 minutes before the actual closing time—even though we were already halfway through our food.

The place is clean and usually has enough seating. Located in NEX, it is highly accessible too.

I found a centipede in my tomato soup—something I've never experienced before. It was really traumatic and has made me hesitant to eat Yong Tau Foo or Mala Tang in the future. I was so stunned that I called over the staff, then rushed to the washroom to vomit everything I had eaten. I didn’t manage to take a photo because I was too shocked and afraid to deal with the sight of such a large unknown object in my food. My mind went blank, and all I could think about was vomiting. After the meal, I quickly went to get some charcoal.

Pretty disappointing experience in terms of service. Reason being, it's peak hour and the shop is severely understaffed. 1 young guy manning the cashier + stocking up on ingredients + wiping the table, 1 young lady doing all the cooking. And 1 guy washing the bowls.
To add on, place was small. There was an aunty that just blatantly cut everyone's queue and walked in. No staff stopped her. Poor control of situation & I can't blame them.
Tables were placed so near each other, that getting out seat was difficult.
However the food is not bad. Mild spicy level was just right.

Have always been loving this. The soup base is nice and flavorful. The choice of ingredients is also very fresh in this branch

Dinner time is peak hour, long q. Maybe the staff can help to arrange. Some customers 2 pax but holding 4 seats. Mala soup, I worried too spicy so choose medium spicy, 🍲 taste not bad. But the longer u eat, the soup spicy taste level up. So far, I have tried tomato & mala soup, both soup flavourful. The thin slices meat should be separate to ensure it fully cooked.
Take note: Min order 280g per bowl. Good thing is the digital weight is on the counter. Customer can see it and can check whether achieve the min weight requirement.
(Past experience with another similar restaurant, my friend pass thru a long q until her turn then she was asked to add more because she has not achieve min weight. 🤭 That one, their digital weight at the cashier counter and hide under the top of the table)

Love their rich, tangy tomato soup base. flavourful without being too heavy! Perfect with fresh ingredients like handmade noodles, tofu, and sliced beef. My go-to for a comforting, non-spicy mala fix.

Update:
Visited again during dinner time and there was a crowd. We queued for a short period of time and the seats were allocated to us.
The food still tastes great!

Visited the restaurant during the day at an off peak timing so there are less crowds and no queues. I have visited other branches too, and I am glad that the quality of the food is consistent throughout the outlets.
The soup broth is rich and aromatic. The food is also served quite quickly within a short period of time!

Gong Yuan Mala Tang is not new in Singapore and has been around for quite sometime. I first had their mala tang back in their kovan branch and was quite impressed with the soul base and wide selection of ingredients that were avaliable for selection.
The nex outlet is slightly bigger than the one in kovan and they have more sears available. During weekends, you will definitely need to queue up outside as they are usually full during key peak hours.
You will need to queue up and when seats are available, the staff will bring you in and asked you to select your ingredients. You will need to grab a bowl and pick yourself. Do take note that the minimum weight is at least 280g. For two person, I manage to load up at total of 850g for a total price of 25.20 including gst and service charge. The price per 100g is at 2.68 sgd.
The soup taste wise is standard across all their outlets in Singapore. I'm not sure if msg is added into their soup but I don't really feel thirsty after having it. Maybe experts can advise on this. Haha. Overall, it is a a good experience for me in terms of taste and freshness of the food. Do come over and try it out if you're around the area! 😋
